The Rev. Dr. Joan Saniuk began serving as MCC Sacred Journey’s Provisional Pastor in January 2016 and on Palm Sunday April 9, 2017 was elected by the congregation to serve as Pastor. A native of Omaha, Joan worked as an aerospace engineer before her call to the pulpit of MCC Boston in 1997. While serving as Pastor of MCC Boston, Joan was a founding member of a coalition that successfully organized over 1,000 religious leaders to support marriage in Massachusetts. She studied Feminist Spirituality at Immaculate Heart College Center in Los Angeles, and earned a Doctor of Ministry from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, MA. Joan also has graduate degrees in engineering, and has worked as a college mathematics and statistics
Rev. Joan is passionate about working with people who are “spiritual but not religious,” healing from religion-based anti-LGBT trauma, supporting women's leadership in MCC, and overcoming racism.
In her free time, Joan finds spiritual support in gardening and playing her guitar. She has been married to Sharilyn Steketee for over twenty-five years – with their marriage legally recognized, by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, since 2004.
